School Counselor Voice [1] February 2019 | A Newsletter for News and Updates for the Russell School Counseling Department Housekeeping Milestone Madness Changes Mrs. Wright A few things will change for Mrs. Wright in order to better accommodate students throughout Milestone Madness. She will be doing 3rd Grade lessons from 1:15 pm- 1:45 pm Tuesday-Thursday. She will be at Rusell during the following times: Mon- 9:00 am- 1:00 pm, Tues.-Thurs- 10:00 am- 2:00 pm and Fri. 9:00 am- 1:00 pm. Mrs. Nation Mrs. Nation will also have some changes due to Milestone Madness. K & 1st classroom lessons will continue to be from 8:00 am – 8:30 pm. However, with Milestone Madness beginning at 8:15, this would interfere with lessons for 4th and 5th grade. If you are a 4th or 5th grade teacher that needs to schedule a lesson during this time please reach out to Mrs. Nation to work out a date and time. Small Group Mrs. Wright 2nd Grade Friendship Group-Strengthening friendship skills and bonds between girls in the 2nd grade. I do have some openings for referrals if you would like to recommend one of your students for the group. Mrs. Nation Mrs. Nation will continue to meet with the 4th Grade Girls Self-Esteem Group, “Love Your Selfie”, at varying times throughout the week to ensure that students are not continually missing the same class. We have a new bulletin board by the gym that we would love our students to respond to the prompt “My school counselor taught me...” Mrs. Wright I wanted to share some of my use of time data with you from August-January. Classroom Lessons-101 Sessions Small Group- 45 Sessions Individual Counseling- 140 Sessions Student Mental Health A few stats... •13% of children 8-15 years old experience a mental health condition (and 50% of these children do not receive treatment) •Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 •The average delay between onset of symptoms and intervention is 8-10 years. •17% of high school students seriously consider suicide •70% of youth in state and local juvenile justice systems have a mental illness.
